Legitimating the European Union ". Aspirations, Inputs and Performance"
Mather, Janet
Macmillan Ltd.
This is a study in EU legitimacy from the perspective of EU citizens. Janet Mather argues that legitimacy is empirical: 'legitimacy only exists if people feel that it does' and that the EU is a unique and dynamic institution, hence legitimating factors are also evolutionary. She shows that liberal democracy has not established EU legitimacy - hence looking at new forms of input and performance to examine prospects for new forms of legitimating the EU.
